NVIDIA's Turing GPUs contain a brand new hardware accelerator for optical flow. This hardware accelerator, which is independent of CUDA cores, calculates optical flow vectors between a given frame pair at very high accuracy and high performance. This session provides a brief overview of the optical flow functionality and SDK, which was recently released by NVIDIA. We'll cover the challenges involved in integrating real-time ray-traced reflections at 60fps in 4k and how future developments using DXR and NVIDIA RTX will enable improvements to both graphics and performance. We'll also discuss the challenges to achieving state-of-the-art graphical quality in virtual reality. We'll explain how to deploy a weakly supervised deep learning accelerator solution for end-to-end industrial inspection in the framework of vision-based anomaly detection. Compared with other computer vision problems, deploying a deep learning-based industrial inspection solution in production runs into three fundamental limiters scarcity of curated data, extreme low quantity of defects, and multi-scale defect sizes. We will describe how to overcome these by using weakly supervised transfer learning that's based on award-winning U-net architecture. We also provide a deep dive into concepts by using examples that include data curation, verification, and end-to-end deployment based on an NVIDIA GPU Cloud development environment with the latest versions of CUDA and cuDNN, as well as GPU-Accelerated Tensorflow and Keras.  Back

Programming robots remains notoriously difficult. Equipping robots with the ability to learn would bypass the need for what often ends up being time-consuming task-specific programming. This talk will describe recent progress in deep reinforcement learning (robots learning through trial and error), in apprenticeship learning (robots learning from observing people), and in meta-learning for action (robots learning to learn). The main focus of the talk is on an autonomous tidying-up robot system, which we have recently announced. We'll describe how we integrated cutting-edge speech and natural language processing and computer vision technologies to build such an autonomous system that can work on complex real-world applications with a high accuracy. Large AEC projects involve complex structure design and validation tools but also benefit from High-end Visualization and VR for proper scale-one immersion and volume apprehension. CADMakers has been one of the very early adopters of Dassault Systemes 3DEXPERIENCE that combines the legacy of over 20 years of CATIA CAD excellence with advanced rendering materials support and native VR immersion without the need to use other external tools. This presentation will provide an unique inside view into todays and future possibilities of decision making in building design, leveraging the power of integrated Virtual Reality and Visualization experiences that happen directly in the CAD software tools of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. The talk will present some of the latest GPU intensive 3DEXPERIENCE platform achievements at CADMakers, including how the platform is being used for building construction simulation, visual High-End Material validation for realistic AEC design review but also actual VR usages showing the different graphics performance gains obtained with large AEC projects, as well as how VR SLI allows enabling 90FPS immersion for multi-user multi-location VR reviews. Talk will be presented with actual AEC dataset used by CADMakers for some of their buildings designed with 3DEXPERIENCE.

In this session we will discuss the applications of machine learning techniques in improving VLSI design reliability and testability. As we continue to push performance in semiconductor design, we are shrinking the geometry of transistors and moving to non-planar FinFET devices. Due to this effect, the available area for a device to dissipate heat from current switching is reducing, thus causing reliability concerns. High Self-heat (SH) temperature of the device can not only degrade device lifetime but also affect interconnect reliability. Since none of our sign-off tools can handle full chip SH analysis and running Spice simulations at full chip is infeasible, we developed a deep Learning model that can quickly and accurately predict Self-heat temperature. Design testability is an important consideration of modern VLSI design. To improve design testability, additional registers (test points) are inserted into the design to enhance the observability of the design. Inspired by recent success of Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) in graph problems, we propose to use GCN to predict difficult to test nodes in the design. We believe that GCN is well suited to process graph representations of logic circuits. We train a high performance GCN classifier model with multiple GPUs on a large set of design data. This GCN classifier is then used in an iterative process to select test point insertion candidates for improving testability. Experimental results show the proposed GCN model has superior accuracy to classical machine learning models and can achieve better results than commercial test analysis tools.    Back

Abstract:
Training a deep-learning gaze estimator requires a massive, diverse, and high-quality training set, which is challenging to produce because it requires photographing subjects and manually labeling pupil position and gaze direction accurately. We'll describe how we created anatomically informed eye and face 3D models for infrared illumination and rendering near-eye images annotated with accurate gaze labels. We use 4M synthetic eye images in combination with real-world images to train a near-eye gaze estimator for VR and AR headsets. Over a wide 40x30-degree field of view, the estimator achieves higher accuracy on real subjects than previous methods. The estimator uses an optimized network architecture that requires fewer convolutional layers than previous deep learning-based gaze trackers, achieving low latency on desktop and mobile hardware. In addition to gaze estimation, we'll show how to use the network for robust pupil estimation and accurate remote-gaze estimation.  Back

Learn about the efficiency of edge analytics obtained from comprehensive experiments on detecting cracks and corrosion from images. We'll describe how robotic systems that can autonomously collect and analyze data provide an alternative to the time-consuming and labor-intensive manual inspection practices now used for civil infrastructures. On-board data analysis capabilities for efficient inspection path planning are essential for autonomous data collection. As a result, computationally expensive deep neural networks must be incorporated into inspection robots, which have limitations in their computing and memory resources. We'll explain how our solution achieves quick inference and low memory demands through transfer learning and network pruning and discuss how it enables efficient edge computing in the context of Internet of Things.  Back

The growing prevalence of synthetic data for training deep learning networks will revolutionize robotic systems. Synthetic data holds the promise of nearly unlimited pre-labeled training data that is generated safely out of harm's way. One of the key challenges involved in using synthetic data is bridging the reality gap to ensure that networks trained on this data operate correctly when exposed to data from the real world. We'll discuss our recent progress in exploring sim-to-real transfer in robotics and explore the reality gap for real-time detection and pose estimation of known household objects from a single RGB image. We'll show that for this problem the reality gap can be spanned by a simple combination of domain randomized and photorealistic data. We will also discuss the use of reinforcement learning for sim-to-real robotic problems such as grasping, peg-in-hole insertion, and articulated interaction.  Back

We'll explain how the cost of nearly 90 percent of U.S. deliveries is in the last miles of the route. We'll also provide details on the Kiwibot, which can navigate autonomously on sidewalks, deliver goods in perfect condition, and make delivery as economical as possible. The robots take advantage of the computational power provided by the NVIDIA Jetson TX2 platform to simultaneously run deep learning and classical computer vision algorithms based on six monocular cameras to navigate sidewalks and avoid many kinds of obstacles.  Back

We'll explain how a customized build of Unreal Engine makes it possible to play volumetric videos in VR in real time. We will also outline how volumetric videos can be streamed online through Sketchfab OSGB and Facebook GLTF format, established platforms with millions of users. In addition, we'll cover how we minimized the number of cameras needed for texturing by up-rezing our source videos from 4k to 8k using a GAN pre-trained neural network. We'll discuss recently available GPU hardware support for ray tracing, and examine how this makes it possible to fully ray-trace scenes in real time, even on high-end head-mounted displays (HMDs). Real-time ray tracing has been considered the Holy Grail of rendering, but existing solutions like NVIDIA OptiX were limited to moderate display resolutions and frame rates. As a result, they weren't feasible for ray tracing on head-mounted displays (HMDs), which typically feature a wide field of view and require constant high frame rates to avoid motion sickness. We'll examine how GPU hardware support from technologies like NVIDIA's Turing and RTX allows users to fully ray trace scenes on HMDs.  Back

As concerns grow about aging infrastructure and environmental sustainability, integrated methods and software tools are needed to facilitate infrastructure health monitoring, perform data-driven and model-centric analysis, and achieve cost-effective and carbon-efficient design, construction, and operation. Analyzing and modeling large-scale civil infrastructure is a computationally intensive and time-consuming task. Truly immersive virtual reality demands a display resolution and field of view that matches the human visual system. Although VR headsets continue to improve, meeting this challenge pushes the limits of per-frame computation time, bandwidth, power, and heat. We'll discuss gaze-contingent rendering, which offers an equally immersive experience at a lower cost by taking advantage of the idiosyncrasies of human peripheral vision. The spatial resolution of human perception decreases rapidly as a function of eccentricity relative to center gaze, allowing a reduced fidelity image to be displayed in the periphery without the user noticing. We'll describe our psychophysical experiment to determine the latency requirements of such a system and discuss our findings showing that state-of-the-art rendering techniques with system latencies up to 50-70 milliseconds were undetectable at the 50 percent threshold level.  Back

Well describe how 6 River Systems leveraged ROS and the NVIDIA Jetson platform (TX1/TX2) to build a fleet of collaborative autonomous robots. Using LIDAR and RGBD cameras, the robots can safely and autonomously navigate the warehouse to automate work. With the TX1/2, we were able to process and analyze data from our sensors to build an accurate representation of our environment. Well discuss how we use this information to autonomously navigate warehouses filled with associates, forklifts, and other fulfillment equipment. Well also examine how the Jetson platform allowed us to make intelligent decisions and optimize the flow of associates, robots, and inventory in a warehouse.  Back

Learn how a successful implementation of a low memory footprint, multi-GPU iterative method makes it possible to efficiently resolve localization of spontaneous nonlinear flow in deforming porous media. Grasping this physical process is essential to ensure safe underground waste storage and understand natural fluid migration in reservoirs. We'll describe our parallel, matrix-free solver design, which provides a short time to solution and can solve a variety of coupled and nonlinear systems of partial differential equations in 3D. We will unveil the key algorithmic and optimization concepts that enable our stencil-based solvers to converge in few iterations, while tackling the hardware limit on the most recent NVIDIA high-bandwidth GPU accelerators. Also, we will explain how we achieved 98 percent parallel efficiency on 5000 NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPUs on the hybrid Cray XC-50 Piz Daint supercomputer at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre, CSCS.

We'll describe the transition of an unstructured-grid computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code from a dense MPI model to shared memory models suitable for a many-core landscape. Unstructured grid approaches are often used in CFD to solve Navier-Stokes equations because they accommodate geometric complexity. Turbulent flows encountered in aerospace applications generally require highly anisotropic meshes, driving the need for implicit solution methodologies to efficiently solve discrete equations. We'll discuss node-level studies of computationally intense CFD kernels on traditional x86 architectures and on NVIDIA GPUs. The memory-bound nature of CFD codes is an obstacle to higher performance, and the opt-tree structure of adaptive Cartesian meshes adds the challenge of data parallelism. Cartesian mesh solvers have higher memory bandwidth requirements due to their larger and varying stencil. We'll detail how redesigning and implementing a legacy Cartesian mesh CFD solver and improving algorithms and data structures helped us achieve higher performance in CPUs. We'll also explain how we used a structure of array-based data layout and GPU features like Unified Memory and Multi Process Service to improve GPU performance over a CPU-only version.  Back

We'll present performance results of an in-house compressible direct numerical simulation code on the latest GPUs. This GPU-Accelerated code, called ANUROOP, solves 3D Navier-Stokes equations using an unstructured finite volume framework. Following up on our GTC 2018 talk, we'll show weak and strong scaling results on the latest NVIDIA Tesla V100 GPUs, demonstrating that performance on the V100 is about twice as fast as on the NVIDIA Tesla P100. We'll discuss how the code scales linearly up to 25 nodes of the Prometheus cluster, which corresponds to 200 V100 GPUs. We will also present the Volta architecture-specific optimization techniques used in ANUROOP that further enhance performance.  Back

Well talk about data exploration and how its enabling next-generation buildings. Well describe how were using a mesh-based server application to tackle the building industrys headaches, and how GPU acceleration with Python allows us to perform large calculations. Our data scraping and data wrangling processes include geometrical transformation functions, high-level matrix multiplication, proximity search algorithm in quadtree structures, and advanced topological functions. Well explain how we use GPUs to train a neural network to accurately classify information within a building to create a clean and exploitable data model, a task thats impossible using the actual systems. Well also cover how this application benefits architects, technical coordinators, project owners, and others by increasing control accuracy and optimizing time and costs.

Learn how GPU-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) paves the way for fast, affordable high-fidelity simulations for automotive aerodynamics. Highly resolved transient CFD simulations based on pure CPU systems are computationally expensive and constrained by available computational resources. For years, this posed a problem for automotive OEMs working on aerodynamic design. We'll describe our solution, ultraFluidX, a novel CFD solver designed to leverage the massively parallel architecture of GPUs. We will outline how its efficient multi-GPU implementation allows the tool to achieve turnaround times of just a few hours on a single GPU machine. This makes it possible to perform simulations of fully detailed production-level passenger and heavy-duty vehicles overnight, which is a breakthrough for simulation-based design.  Back

We'll discuss an extended PBR material that expands the industry-standard PBR GGX. Learn how Microsoft is extending WebRTC to enable real-time, interactive 3D streaming from the cloud to any low-powered remote device. The purpose is to provide an open-source toolkit to enable industries to leverage remote cloud rendering in their service and product pipelines. This is required for many industries in which the scale and complexity of 3D models, scenes, physics, and rendering is beyond the capabilities of a mobile device platform. We are extending the industry standard WebRTC framework to 3D scenarios such as mixed reality. We'll explain the work we did to realize the goal of delivering high-quality 3D applications to any client — web, mobile, desktop, and embedded. This is only possible using the NVIDIA NVENCODE pipeline for server-side rendering on the cloud.

Learn how to leverage GPUs to improve chip-design quality and make the VLSI design process faster. We will show a GPU-Accelerated global placement engine built on PyTorch that achieved a 40X speedup over multi-threaded implementation and can place a 10M cell design in four minutes. In addition to direct GPU acceleration of design automation software, we'll explain how we apply a deep learning approach to physical design problems, which indirectly leverages GPU. We will illustrate a method that leverages convolutional neural networks and fully convolutional networks to predict design rule checking hotspots during physical design. This deep learning-based approach significantly outperforms other ML approaches such as support vector machine in prediction accuracy.

We'll discuss how we're using several Jetson TX2-based edge computing devices and LPWAN networks to monitor in real time the flow of vehicles and pedestrians in a network. In particular, we'll describe our work to better understand and predict pedestrian and vehicle flow around the Liverpool CBD to ease congestion, provide better transport options, and improve health and safety. In our solution, each device in the monitored network processes the live feed from its own camera. We'll explain how we use the YOLO v3 object detector to analyze these frames and extract the pedestrians and vehicles in each, then pass this information onto a tracker algorithm (Kalman filter) to determine their trajectories. After a frame is processed, it is discarded and only aggregated indicators are sent over the LPWAN network to a dashboard to reduce privacy concerns and bandwidth requirements.  Back

We'll discuss our work at Esri to reconstruct 3D building models from aerial LiDAR data with the help of deep neural networks. The value of accurate 3D building models for cities is hard to overestimate, but collecting and maintaining this data is labor-intensive, error-prone, and expensive. We teamed up with Miami-Dade County and NVIDIA to see if we could streamline this data-acquisition workflow or at least, make it more cost-effective. We used a Mask R-CNN model trained to detect and report instances of roof segments of various types. Our talk will cover data preparation and Mask R-CNN training and achieved precision. We'll also outline the inference architecture, the integration of TensorFlow and ArcGIS Pro 2.3, and the steps we used to reconstruct 3D building models from the predictions.  Back

We'll present Isaac Gym, a platform for distributed high-performance reinforcement learning training, research in robotics, animation, and biomechanics. Isaac Gym supports different rendering and simulation, including Flex and PhysX backends. We'll discuss how GPU-Accelerated high fidelity physics simulation can simulate not only rigid but also deformable soft-bodies, cloth, ropes and liquids, and interaction between these elements. Our reinforcement learning training pipeline is also GPU-Accelerated and we provide fast parallel multi-camera rendering support for tasks involving vision. We'll explain how a Python wrapper simplifies and speed prototyping, and allows us to perform many experiments and set benchmarks. We'll show some of the most impressive training results in classical and new challenging robotics and locomotion training environments in Isaac Gym and share information about the performance and scalability of our GPU-Accelerated simulation and training pipeline.  Back

We'll provide the latest updates on several Khronos cross-platform standards, including OpenXR for portable AR and VR, the new-generation Vulkan GPU API, the SPIR-V standard intermediate language for parallel compute and graphics, glTF for efficient transmission of 3D assets, and OpenCL for parallel heterogeneous programming. We'll describe PLDC, a capability embedded inside NuFlare's MBM-1000 multi-beam mask writer that performs semiconductor mask-process correction. PLDC does pixel-level dose correction and improves quality and reliability of shapes printed on the mask. We'll explain how PLDC processes 540 TB of mask data in 10 hours, a feat that would not be possible without advances in GPU computing.

BMW’s logistics and industry 4.0 research team, X Works, will present how GPU computing power is being leveraged in an end-to-end pipeline for object labelling and detection, developed in house and deployed to a wide range of applications throughout BMW Group. The talk will include a description of how GPU computing is being used to support the creation of photorealistic meshes, and how our 3D pipeline helps BMW associates efficiently create large datasets to train 2D/3D detection models for industrial use case in robotics, autonomous transport, interactive layout planning, virtual reality visualization and smart three dimensional maps.

In this session, we'll discuss our approach to applying deep learning algorithms to full car inspection and address the challenges involved in real time data processing. We plan to demonstrate how we apply convolutional neural networks used for geometry verification during the complete vehicle inspection on BMW assembly line. The complete inspection of a fully assembled car involves verifying the geometry of the car, ensuring the correct customization, and detecting possible defects. AI-aided computer vision eliminates problems of traditional approaches arising from highly reflective surfaces and specular reflections. Using deep learning models and the processing power of a multi-GPU system, we can make the inspection happen in real time.
