Computing to Cure Cancer: Building Exascale Deep Learning Tools for Effective Cancer Surveillance
Abstract:

The nation has recently embarked on an "all government" approach to the problem of cancer. As part of this initiative, the Department of Energy (DOE) has entered into a partnership with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This partnership has identified three key challenges that the combined resources of DOE and NCI can accelerate. An interagency agreement has been developed that provides a framework for this joint work. Four DOE national laboratories are collaborating with the NCI. At Oak Ridge National Lab, as part of the population health pilot that we lead, we have been developing deep learning approaches using supercomputing resources to automatically annotate cancer pathology reports and we present initial results based on our experience.
