Abstract:

HPE Deep Learning solutions empower innovation at any scale, building on our purpose-built HPC systems and technologies solutions, applications and support services. Deep Learning demands massive amounts of computational power. Those computation power usually involve heterogeneous computation resources, e.g., GPUs and InfiniBand as installed on HPE Apollo.   NovuMinds NovuForce system leveraging state of art technologies make the deployment and configuration procedure fast and smooth. NovuForce deep learning softwares within the docker image has been optimized for the latest technology like NVIDIA Pascal GPU and infiniband GPUDirect RDMA. This flexibility of the software, combined with the broad GPU servers in HPE portfolio, makes one of the most efficient and scalable solutions.

We present a state-of-the-art image recognition system, Deep Image, developed using end-to-end deep learning. The key components are a custom-built supercomputer dedicated to deep learning, a highly optimized parallel algorithm using new strategies for data partitioning and communication, larger deep neural network models, novel data augmentation approaches, and usage of multi-scale high-resolution images. On one of the most challenging computer vision benchmarks, the ImageNet classification challenge, our system has achieved the best result to date, with a top-5 error rate of 5.98% - a relative 10.2% improvement over the previous best result.

The rise of the internet, especially mobile internet, has accelerated the data explosion - a driving force for the great success of deep learning in recent years. Behind the scenes, the heterogeneous high-performance computing is another key enabler of that success. In this talk, we will share some of work we did at Baidu. We will highlight how big data, deep analytics and high-performance heterogeneous computing can work together with great success.
